Lady Bucs win three in a row

The Briarwood Academy Lady Bucs defeated the Lady Crusaders of Curtis Baptist 9-1 in softball action Sept. 15.

"The bottom of our lineup really stepped up today," said head coach Hannah DeMore following the game. "And the top of the lineup really came on at the end and finished it off for us."

Neither team scored in the first three innings, and Curtis Baptist put the first run on the board in the top of the fourth to go ahead by one. Briarwood promptly responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Three of those runs came off the bat of eighth-grader Brianna Hudson when she blasted a three-RBI double to center field.

Briarwood added an additional run in the inning off an RBI single to center field by second baseman Kris Dawson.

"I don't really remember the pitch," Hudson said of her double following the game. "I just hit it, and it went up the middle."

Hudson continued adding to the Lady Bucs' score in the next inning with a 2-RBI double again hit to center field.

"I do remember that pitch," she said. "That one was outside, but it ended up going up the middle to center."

Dawson added another run in the fifth, this time with an RBI double again hit to center field. Tiffany Pate added an additional run with an RBI double slapped to left field, and the score stood at 8-1 after five innings.

Beyond the one run scored in the fourth, Curtis Baptist never mounted any serious offensive threat. An RBI single to center by Pate added a run to the Lady Bucs' score, and the game was called after six innings with the score at 9-1.

"We finished today, and that's our continuing motto for the season," DeMore said after the game. "I do want to mention Brianna Hudson, our eighth-grader who came in in the middle of the season. She had five RBIs today, and eight in the last two games, and that's really something."

Hudson herself didn't seem to think it any great feat. "I just hit the ball," she said with a shrug.

Briarwood was host to a Saturday double-header, defeating John Hancock Academy 12-0 and 18-0.

Briarwood has an away game today vs Nathanael Greene Academy, and will wrap up the season with an away game vs Gatewood Academy on Monday.
