Board OKs exchange of land near Brickyard

The McDuffie County Board of Education agreed Sept. 15 to swap fragments of land with a homeowner adjacent to The Brickyard.

The board authorized a quit-claim deed to grant David Callahan .03 acres in exchange for a nearby plot of .01 acres.

According to information submitted to the board, a previous owner of the adjacent lot had use of a small parcel of land adjacent to the field house property. The school district sought to trade some property "to even up the property lines to the benefit of both parties."

The board also approved the resignation of Thomson High School teacher Alicia Brown, the termination of bus driver Deborah Neely, three recommendations for transfer and four leaves of absence. The board also approved six hires: Lee Sleister, bus driver; Patsy Newsome, substitute driver and related duties; Roosevelt Jones, bus driver; Stacy Roberts, part-time mechanic; Donald Reese, high school economics teacher and Hanna Poston, high school special education teacher.

The board approved the purchase of a maintenance truck. Culpepper Ford of Thomson submitted the bid of $22,973. Thomson Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram had submitted an offer of $29,940.

The board approved dozens of field trips. The list includes band and athletic events and destinations such as Steed Dairy in Grovetown, Kackleberry Farm in Louisville and Hickory Hill in Thomson. The FFA will attend the national convention in Indianapolis from Nov. 18 to 22 and three events in Georgia.

The accelerated physics class will attend Physics Day at Six Flags. Students from McDuffie Achievement Center will visit Augusta Tech in Augusta, Thurmond Dam in Clarks Hill, S.C., and the Richmond County Solid Waste Facility in Augusta.

The board approved dozens of fundraisers, including the sale of clothing, school supplies, Valentine's Day and Christmas wishes and assorted foods, in addition to a walkathon, car wash, book drives and Christmas collections.
