To the editor:
The McDuffie County Hospital Authority has withheld information regarding the proposed agreement with University from the taxpayers and citizens of McDuffie County for approximately one year.
In each and every conversation, meeting, and newspaper article, the chairman, Bill Doupé, always answers that he cannot discuss anything because of a "confidentiality agreement."
But the University Hospital has openly discussed the acquisition of the hospital. They have said they are not concerned with the impact moving our hospital would have on our medical professionals, the employees of the hospital, or the businesses located near our hospital. The University Hospital simply wants our state-approved Certificate of Need for our 26 hospital beds. Our hospital has a payroll of $9.5 million and we cannot afford to lose this income for our McDuffie County workers. A state study says our medical community generates approximately $43 million annually. This is very big!
McDuffie citizens want and must have answers before the authority destroys our city.
