The Briarwood Middle School football team improved to 5-0 with a 42-22 victory over Brentwood Academy.
"The first team came out and took care of business which allowed our younger kids to play the second half and gain valuable experience," Coach Bo Fleming said.
The Eagles had a failed onside attempt on the opening kickoff, setting the Bucs up with the ball on the Brentwood 47. Two plays later Dakota Reese scored on a 36-yard TD run. He also added the 2-point conversion to make it 8-0. The Eagles picked up one first down before turning the ball over on downs. On the first play from scrimmage, Tripp Harper ran a 75-yard TD run for the Bucs. Reese ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 16-0 at 5:15 left in the first quarter. Brentwood then drove down to the Bucs' 9-yard line before Jeb Blount picked off an Eagle pass and raced 99 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. Davis Newton then hit Tucker Huff on a 3-yard pass to add the 2-point conversion.
The score stood at 24-0 with 7:30 left in the second quarter.
The Eagles were forced to punt and Blount returned it 25 yards, setting the Bucs up at the Eagle 20-yard line. Two plays later, Ty Gunter scored on an 8-yard touchdown run. The 2-point attempt failed, making it 30-0 with 3:50 left in the second quarter. The Bucs again forced an Eagle punt and on their first play from scrimmage, Reese scored on a 52-yard TD run. The 2-point conversion failed, making it 36-0.
The Eagles got on the board on a 61-yard TD run and added the 2-point conversion to make it 36-8 with 7:15 left in the third quarter.
After a Briarwood punt, the Eagles scored on a 75-yard run and were successful on 2-point conversion, making the score 36-16. The Bucs' final score came on a 25-yard run by Harper. The 2-point conversion failed, making it 42-16 with 4:30 left in the game. The Eagles scored on the last play as they connected on a 30-yard pass, making the final score 42-22.
The Bucs play host to Augusta Prep at 6 p.m. today.
