Loss didn't dampen spirit of Lady Devils

The Warren County Lady Devils dusted off their gloves to return to the softball field for the first time in three years against Harlem.

For many of the girls, the game marked their first experience playing organized softball.

The team was formed when the principal, Kaveous Preston, agreed to serve as the head coach after repeated requests by the girls to restart the softball program.

Even though the scoreboard showed that Harlem won 13-0 in four innings, the inexperienced Lady Devils team remained positive. While posing for a picture after the game, someone asked the players why they were holding up a finger and chanting, "We're No. 1" when they had just lost the game.

One of the players responded, "We didn't lose. We were winners when we simply took the field!"
