Lancaster replaces Harbin on county 's board of tax assessors

After serving for 18 years on the McDuffie County Board of Tax Assessors, Ruby Harbin has stepped aside. Robin Lancaster will fill that position on the board.

The county commissioners appointed Lancaster at a Sept. 20 meeting.

Harbin began her first term as an assessor on Sept. 21, 1993, and went on to serve three six-year terms.

"We've really enjoyed having her," said Linda Thurmond, the chief appraiser in the McDuffie County Assessors Office. "She is very knowledgeable, and she helped our office out tremendously. All of us will very much miss her."

Throughout her stint as an assessor, Harbin completed more than 300 hours of training and served as the board's chairwoman for many years. The position requires someone who can dedicate the time and energy to manage its many responsibilities, Thurmond said.

"It takes three or four hours a month for meetings and knowledge of appraisal work," she said. "You have to go to certain schools each year, learn the tax laws and be accountable for the work we do in the office."

Though Lancaster will need to learn board procedures, Thurmond thinks she already has the necessary education, experience and dedication.

"She knows appraisal and knows her way around county government," Thurmond said. "She seems friendly, honest and willing to serve."

Lancaster works as the office manager for her husband's company, McDuffie Electrical Inc.

She has worked in the appraisal business for 13 years. She said she is looking forward to taking on the duties of a county tax assessor.

"I like doing that type of work," Lancaster said. "And it helps me contribute to the community."

Lancaster will serve a six-year term as an assessor. She will join Chairman Tommy Gantt and Bob Ballard on the board of assessors.
