The Briarwood Middle School Bucs ended their season Thursday night with a 16-8 loss to Gatewood.
"We played hard and never quit," coach Bo Fleming said. "The breaks did not go our way as we had several drives stopped by less than a yard."
The Gators took the opening kickoff and kicked a 21-yard field goal to make the score 3-0 with 7:15 left in the first quarter.
The Bucs were forced to punt on their first possession.
The Gators then drove and scored on a 1-yard run with 1:17 left in the first quarter. They added the extra point to make the score 10-0, which was the score at halftime.
The Bucs took the second-half kickoff and marched down the field. Dakota Reese scored from 21 yards out. He added the 2-point run to make the score 10-8, with 1:10 left in the third quarter.
The Gators got their final score on a 5-yard TD run. They missed the extra point and the score stood at 16-8 with 6:00 left in the last quarter. The Bucs got one last chance but an interception sealed the win for the Gators.
The Bucs finished the season with a record of 7-2.
"We had a great season, and I could not have asked for a better group of kids to coach," Fleming said.
Fleming said Dakota Reese had a great year, with 182 carries for 1,558 yards and 19 touchdowns. "Unbelievable numbers for a middle school running back," Fleming said.
