The Thomson-McDuffie Recreation Department was host to the sectional competition for the NFL's Punt, Pass and Kick competition at Sweetwater Park on Oct. 8.
This is the 15th consecutive year the recreation department has hosted a local competition and the eighth year for the sectionals.
There were 10 local events completed in collaboration with the McDuffie County schools PE classes; 1,318 children from McDuffie County participated in the local events and 68 participated in the sectionals.
The sectional competition was made up of winners from local events from northeast, east central and southeast Georgia. McDuffie County had the largest participation per capita of any community.
Monte Ashcraft, the athletics and event coordinator, and Carl Gunn of the recreation department, Brooks Johnson and Craig Chapman of Norris Elementary, Aaron Hall, Daniel Farrell and Sherrie Smith of Thomson-McDuffie Middle School, Shane McCook of Thomson Elementary, and Jay Poston supervised the events.
The participants with the five highest scores out of the seven sectionals from around the state will compete in the regional competition, scheduled for Nov. 26 at the Georgia Dome during halftime of the Atlanta Falcons game.
The recreation department offered congratulations to the sectional winners from McDuffie County: girls, 12-13 age group, Shay Samuels; girls, 13-14 age group, Anna McNair; boys, 12-13 age group, Drue Poston.
The following girls finished either second or third in their respective age divisions: Mya Hester, Kallie Votipkia, Kayla East and P'Asiah Williams. The following boys finished either second or third in their respective age divisions: Jacob Petrie, Jayvontae Kendrick, D'quantavious Franklin, Shaquille Daughty and Aaron Tudor.
