Inmate's death is probed by agencies

An inmate was found dead in his cell at the McDuffie County Law Enforcement Center at 4:45 p.m. Saturday.

Jimmy Allen Luther Jr., 31, of the 200 block of Gardner Drive, was being held in a single cell when employees of the McDuffie County Sheriff's Office found him in an unresponsive condition.

According to Major Ronnie Williamson, emergency medical personnel who were summoned to the jail said there were no signs of life.

As standard procedure and as required by state law, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will investigate Luther's death with the assistance of McDuffie County Sheriff's Investigator Al Reeves, Williamson said.

The investigation is ongoing. On Monday, Luther's body was sent to the GBI Crime Laboratory in Atlanta for an autopsy.

Jail records indicate that Luther was booked on Oct. 14 on felony and misdemeanor charges of hit-and-run and entering an automobile.
