Veterans deserve day of tributes
Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

All of us owe our veterans a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid. Many soldiers died. Many were wounded, and all came back changed by their experiences.

On Friday, Nov. 11, 2011 (11/11/11), a number that originally commemorated the 11th month, 11th day, 11th hour cease-fire of the Great War, several local groups want to show their appreciation.

First, there will be a "canteen" in the Multi-Purpose Room of the McDuffie Library from 9:30 until 11 a.m. It is sponsored by The Friends of the Library, who will provide lots of refreshments and interesting door prizes. This is a time for our veterans to "hang out" and reminisce. If anyone is in need of transportation, please call (706) 595-1341.

At 11 a.m., there will be a wreath laid at the Old Courthouse Veteran's Monument. This is led by the VFW Ladies' Auxiliary.

To complete the day of thanks, the McDuffie County Board of Education and the McDuffie Achievement Center will provide a luncheon for veterans. This will be at noon at McDuffie Place, the old FFA camp.

We encourage all veterans to come and enjoy themselves. We also encourage our community, government officials and media to come extend your thanks to the wonderful men and women who served.

It is easy to forget in our daily rush, but "Freedom Isn't Free!" Our veterans paid dearly for it. Please come be part of our heartfelt "Thank You!"

Peggy Lovejoy,

Friends of the Library</p>
