Patriotic programs thank those who served country

On Nov. 10, the McDuffie Marines and a Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps detail honored veteran Wallace Privett for his service to his country.

Privett, 86, is a veteran of Iwo Jima and Saipan in World War II and battles in the Korean War. He was born Sept. 4, 1925, in Bishopville, S.C.

Nov. 10, 2011, was the 236th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. NJROTC members, led by Gunnery Sgt. Larry Dunn, presented Privett with a Marine Corps birthday cake, a flag and other items.

"The program is about teaching students to be better citizens," Dunn said. "Another important aspect is promoting patriotism."

With Veterans Day on Friday of last week, Dunn said honoring those who have served helps the students get an understanding of what the holiday is all about.

"I just like saying 'Thank you,' " said Battalion Cmdr.Antoine West. "We let veterans know that we still care and support them for their service."
