Briarwood's state title is fourth in four years

The Briarwood Academy varsity competition cheerleaders won their fourth state championship in as many years at the tournament last Saturday at John Milledge Academy in Milledgeville, Ga.

The squad won their first Georgia Independent School Association Class AA state championship in 2008. Both head coach Amy Hadden and assistant coach Lisa Newsome have been with the team for all four years.

The victory was especially significant for the six members of the squad who have competed for all four championships. The girls are seniors Shannon Newsome, Sara Betts Brunner, Kayla Rhodes, Ashlyn Dent and Taylor Rabun and junior Marcie Rivers.

The rest of the team is Brianna Hudson, Lauren Langford, Mayleigh Adams, Emilie Wilcher, Morgan Bentley, Kylie Guy, McKinzie Whitaker, Tesla Hill, English Coit and Rachael Coxwell.

Competition routines are 2½ minutes long. The squad is judged on motions and dance, tumbling, jumps, cheer, stunts and pyramids, choreography, voice and loudness, and performance and showmanship.
