Sheriff asks for a new firearms training area

The McDuffie County Sheriff's Office says county police need a new firearms training range. Sheriff Logan Marshall and Maj. Ronnie Williamson told county commissioners last week that deputies need more effective training to ensure their safety and to protect the county from lawsuits.

Commissioners gave initial approval to use of about 50 acres of land owned by the county and the city. Commissioners left open the possibility that other departments might use the training area.

Also, fire and emergency services officials urged the county to merge the two departments when McDuffie Regional Medical Center is sold. That request did not come to a vote.
