MILLEDGEVILLE — Dr. Stanley Hill Merica, age 85, passed away Friday, Nov. 18, 2011.
A memorial service was held Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at 3 p.m. in Williams Funeral Home of Milledgeville Chapel. .
Dr. Merica was born and raised in Indiana. He was the son of the late Stanley Boyer Merica and Marjorie Hill Merica and was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Gieselman Merica. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in World War II, where he served in the Underwater Demolition Team and was a POW. After exiting the military, he entered chiropractic school and graduated from Lincoln Chiropractic College in Indianapolis, Ind., in 1950. Upon graduation, he moved to Georgia where he established Merica Chiropractic and practiced for more than 50 years.
Dr. Merica was a member of the Georgia Chiropractic Association and was the recipient of the Chiropractor of the Year award. Dr. Merica also served on the Chiropractic Board of Examiners for 13 years, serving as their president for many of those years. He had the honor of playing the carinet for the Glen Miller Band and played many times at the famous Glen Island Casino. He enjoyed playing golf, was a voracious reader and had a great love for trout fishing.
He is survived by his daughters, Karen (Dr. Daniel) Fortin of Conyers and Cheryl (Jim) LeBrun of Thomson; son, Dr. Michael (Anne Marie) Merica of Milledgeville; grandchildren, Chris Speight, Jeff Speight, Ryan Merica, Rachel Merica, Jamie Lynn LeBrun, Katelyn LeBrun, Heather LeBrun, Ryan Nicole LeBrun, Skylar Walker, and Gracyn Walker; sisters, Nan Eckfeld and Janet Gross; and brothers, Brad Merica and Gene Merica.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Chard Wray Food Pantry, P.O. Box 309, Milledgeville, GA 31059.
