Lack of offense cripples the Bucs

After an early first-quarter lead, the Briarwood Academy Lady Bucs lost to the Westminster Schools of Augusta Wildcats 52-22 in a road game Nov. 22.

The Lady Bucs are now 1-1-0 overall after a Nov. 21 win over Westminster Christian Academy. The team has not yet competed against a team within the 1-AA region.

For the contest against the Wildcats, Briarwood's starting five were Marcie Rivers, Ashlyn Dent, Kristian Dawson, Rachel Coxwell and Tiffany Pate.

Throughout the first quarter, both teams scored with quick drives and long passes, with two-minute scoreless droughts between putting points on the board.

The Lady Bucs led the Wildcats 5-4 until a Westminster free throw tied the game. The Wildcats scored a goal with four minutes left in the quarter, taking the lead and holding onto it for the rest of the game.

"We're young and inexperienced at a few positions," said Briarwood head coach Clayton Parrish. "It allowed them to exploit our weaknesses."

At the end of the first half, the Wildcats led the Lady Bucs 32-12.

Briarwood opened the second half with a three-point score by Coxwell. After a six-point retaliation by Westminster, Briarwood's Pate stole the ball and returned it down the court for another two.

The game ended with a slow fourth quarter, with the only points coming from a Westminster field goal with 1:12 left to play.

Westminster scored nearly one-third of its 52 points on 3-point field goals.

"We couldn't match up man-to-man, and zone leaves you vulnerable for 3-pointers," Parrish said.

In the coming weeks, the Lady Bucs will work on retrieving loose balls and handling the ball better in general, he said.

"They're an athletic, well-coached team," Parrish said. "This game showed us where we need to work on things."

All basketball games against Edmund Burke Academy scheduled for Monday, Nov. 28, were cancelled. The Buccaneers played against the 1-A region Nathanael Greene Academy at home Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 6 p.m.

The Lady Bucs' next games will be in the Garden City Classic today through Saturday at Augusta Preparatory Day School. Region play will begin Dec. 16 against Gatewood Schools.
