Church presents 'Messiah'

The First Baptist Church of Thomson held its 25th annual presentation of the Christmas portion of Messiah on Sunday night.

Messiah is an oratorio by George Frederic Handel. The Rev. Mark Bowers conducted the performance by the Thomson/McDuffie Community Chorus and Orchestra.

Featured soloists were Allegra Whitney, soprano; Natalie Greenwald Pirkle, alto; James Isom, tenor; and Ben O. Howell Jr., bass.

The concert was dedicated to the memory of the late Dr. Robert W. Parris, the organist for the annual Messiah presentation for 22 years straight, beginning in 1989. He died on Sept. 22.

Churches represented in the program included First Baptist Church, First United Methodist Church, Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Springfield Baptist Church and Thomson Presbyterian Church, all in Thomson, as well as Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Augusta.
