Car, truck crash kills South Carolina woman

A South Carolina woman died Friday when her southbound car collided with a northbound tractor-trailer on Wrens Highway in south McDuffie County.

Candice D. McDonald, 21, of Greenwood, S.C., died in the 4:40 a.m. wreck about a half-mile north of Story Randall Road on Highway 17.

The driver of the rig, Eddie Lee Strobridge, 47, of Soperton, Ga., was not injured.

A Wrens man who witnessed the crash told police he was southbound when McDonald passed him and then stayed in the northbound lane for about a half-mile to a mile. Colby Johnson said he blinked his lights to get the driver's attention. He said McDonald's vehicle moved back into the southbound lane just as Strobridge's truck swerved into the southbound lane, and the vehicles collided.

The point of impact was south of the crest of a hill at 4732 Wrens Highway.

Both vehicles left the roadway and stopped about 200 feet north on the west shoulder, with the truck on top of McDonald's car.

Senior trooper John Freeman said emergency workers had to use the Jaws of Life to remove McDonald from the car.
