Thomson Midget Boys win state champio

The Thomson Midget Boys (11-12-year-olds) won the Georgia Recreation & Park Association state championship on Sunday at Sweetwater Park south of Thomson.

The champions defeated Sumter County, 8-0.

The 9-10 Calhoun All-Star Football team won the 9-10 championship, defeating Pierce County, 38-16. Thomson's 9-10 squad was defeated in the Saturday round.

Carl Gunn, the coach of Thomson's winning 11-12 squad, said the team went 8-0 for the regular season.

"We were 1-1 in the previous tournament, which was the Commissioner's Cup, and 2-0 in this tournament for the state championship, our first since 1980," Gunn said. "This is a fine group of young football players, and I can tell you, the future of football in Thomson looks very bright when these boys get to high school."
